'Nuno Gomes' is not his real name — his name is Nuno Miguel Soares Pereira Ribeiro. He adopted the surname 'Gomes' in honor of his childhood idol, Fernando Gomes, a two-time winner of the European Golden Boot while playing for FC Porto. He is also the club's all-time top scorer in the former UEFA Cup — a competition in which he also holds Benfica's record for appearances, with 30 games.
