Despite being the 'Golden Boy' of his time for Benfica, and despite having a valid contract until 2004, the club announced his termination in a statement on June 2, 2000, without any prior notice. After being released, he went to Euro 2000 with the Portuguese national team in the unusual condition of being a player without a club — and had a brilliant European Championship. After the tournament, he signed with Sporting.
