The 'Good Giant' was part of the European double-winning squads of 1961 and 1962, but never played in a European Cup final: in 1962, with Cavém injured, he could not enter because substitutions were still prohibited. He then played in the finals of 1963, 1965, and 1968, all lost — and thus was never a European champion on the field. Still, he was the top scorer of the competition in 1964/65, with 9 goals.
