He was the top scorer of the national championship 5 times - the highest record ever before the arrival of Eusébio. Even today, he remains in 3rd place on the list of most times top scorer of the national championship, tied with Mário Jardel, and behind Fernando Gomes (6) and obviously Eusébio (7). José Águas is also the record holder for goals scored in a single edition of the Champions League for Benfica, having scored 11 goals in the 1960/61 edition; these numbers surpass the second place, Eusébio and José Torres, by 2 goals, and remain as a club record to this day.
