He was discovered as an athletics athlete by accident: In a football training session at Estádio das Amoreiras in 1938, he jumped over an obstacle at 1.70 m. He ended up breaking the national high jump record (1.88 m, unbeaten for 20 years) and was national champion in long jump and triple jump — all while playing for Benfica. He also scored nine goals in a historic thrashing of Casa Pia (13-1) in 1937 — an individual mark in a single game that the club has never seen matched.
