He played for Sport Lisboa e Benfica from 1907 and was twice president of the club (1916 and 1945/46), but his greatest legacy is not measured in games: he was the one who wrote the lyrics of the club's official anthem, «Avante, avante p'lo Benfica», composed in 1929 to mark the Silver Jubilee.
